Unit 6 Culture internalization Flashcards
What point did Dr. Koestner use the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding to illustrate?
If your family strongly urges you to adopt customs from your culture, you are less likely to internalize them because you feel forced/threatens your autonomy
What is cultural internalization?
Process by which cultural beliefs and practices are adopted by the individual and then enacted in the absence of immediate external contingencies or constraints. –> you care to pursue your cultural norms because your CHOOSE to do them.
What is Deci and Ryan’s theory of internalization?
(1) Children are willing and even active participants in the process –> they are oriented towards connectedness and relatedness naturally.
(2) There are different processes by which internalization occurs:
(A) Introjection – taking in a value or regulatory process but not accepting it as one’s own –> do it but isn’t digested
(B) Identification and integration – fully assimilating a regulation with one’s core sense of self –> becomes a part of who you are
(3) These different internalization processes result in qualitatively different styles of self-regulation
–> how do we feel after success/failure
–> How we we handle challenges
(4) The social context (e.g., parenting) influences which internalization process and regulatory style occurs.
How does introjection differ from externalization, identification and integration in this context? Try to come up with examples for each.
External –> Acting to avoid consequences or to gain rewards
I.e. Going to church to avoid getting scolded by my parents
Introjection –> Acting in accord to a rigid rule because they feel like they OUGHT to.
I.e. Going to church because you’d be ashamed if you didn’t.
Identification –> Recognizing the value of the act but not accepting it as ones own.
I.e. Going to church because you think its the right thing to do.
Integration –> Integrating aspects of the world into a unified representation of who they are.
I.e. Going to church because worshipping God is a part of your self-identity.
What was Michelle Downie’s finding regarding cultural internalization of host and heritage cultures and adjustment?
The degree to which immigrants fully internalize their host and heritage cultures will importantly relate to their adjustment and well-being.
—> internalized culture = better affect within that cultural context
—> integration of both ones own culture and host country related to better overall well-being
According to Michelle Downie’s research what factor is critical to successful cultural internalization?
Parental autonomy support around cultural issues will promote autonomous internalization!
—> I.e. giving rational to why one’s culture is important and accommodating them.
Describe the distinction between individualistic and collectivistic cultures.
Individualistic –> priority given to individuals goals and preferences
Collectivistic –> priority given to needs, norms, & goals of group or collective
Describe the distinction between egalitarian and hierarchical cultures.
Egalitarian –> emphasis on equality and interchangeability among people, people are equal and deserves equal rights and opportunities
Hierarchical –> emphasis on hierarchical and subordinate social relations, people are arranges in order of importance/rank i.e. some people are not entitled to the same things as others
What is cultural relativism? Does this idea align with self-determination theory? What kind of practices are most difficult to internalize?
Cultural relativism –> belief that you should accept someone’s culture no matter what, that every culture is equal
Cultural relativism does not align with self-determination theory because some practices defy human needs –> i.e. bride kidnapping
Hierarchical/vertical practices are the most difficult cultural values to internalize
