UNIT 6 Flashcards
What is patrimonialism and how does it function?
Patrimonialism refers to an informal system for controlling the flow of resources, where individuals are organized based on personal relationships and exchange. It involves non-participation leading to economic and social disadvantages, enforcement of norms through group pressures, and deals made between politicians and clients.
What are some features of patrimonial states?
Patrimonial states have a close link between the state and the dominant class, limited popular participation, reliance on corporatist forms of organization, use of rhetoric and symbols of nationalism, commitment to modernization but growing inequality, and a lack of civil society.
What characterizes a rentier state?
A rentier state derives a substantial portion of its economy from payments from foreign countries in the form of rent. It relies on external rent, such as oil, and does not require a strong domestic productive sector. Only a small proportion of the working population is involved in generating the rent, and the state’s government is the principal recipient of the external rent.
What are some problems associated with rents from natural resources?
Rents from natural resources can lead to the elimination of the public as the major source of state revenue. This allows those in power to ignore the public and rely on rents to repress or co-opt opposition. It can also lead to corruption, a bloated bureaucracy, overdependence on one commodity, and the Dutch disease.
