Unit 6 Flashcards
Why do potatoes grow underground?
to store energy in the form of starch
When the cell has energy to store, what steps does it take?
An ADP molecule gets added to the phosophate group, turning it back into ATP
*Note: ATP is like a rechargeable battery, and can keep turning back into ATP after its energy is used
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6H2O + 6CO2
Based on the formula above, what energy process is taking place?
cellular respiration
Give the formula for cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6H2O + 6CO2
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6H2O + 6CO2
What is required for this reaction to start?
Oxygen and Glucose
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6H2O + 6CO2
How many molecules of oxygen gas are in this equation?
6
What is the cuticle?
Waxy outer coating, reduces water loss
What is cellulose?
Polymer of glucose, makes up cell wall
What is vasular tissue?
transport material in plant
What is (plant) reproduction?
Seeds or spores, dispersal methods: wind, water, animals
What is a non-vascular plant?
No vascular tissue, low-growing, diffusion/osmosis
What is a Rhizoid
Structure that anchors non-vascular plants
What is a vascular plant?
With vascular tissue, able to grow tall
What is Xylem?
tissue that transports water and dissovled materials in vascular plants
What is Phloem?
tissue that transport sugars downwards from leaves
What is a tap root?
System containing one thicker main root
What is a stomata?
opening under the leave for gas exchanges
What is a fiburous root?
System containing many smaller roots
What is a Herbaceous stem?
Stem with no wood in it, common in annual plants
What is an annual?
grows one season, then dies
What is a biennial?
two growing seasons then dies
What is a perennial?
Lives for more than 2 growing seasons
What is a Gymnosperm?
Plants without a covered seed, no protective fruit
What is a Angiosperm?
plants that have seeds covered by fruits
What is phototropism?
Leaves grow towards or away from light
What is thigmotropism?
tendrils wrap around object, or roots avoid object
What is gravitropism?
stem grows against or with gravity
What are Auxins?
Hormone that triggers plant growth
What is Ethylene?
Hormone that triggers ripening of fruit
Where is Meristomatic?
Tip of the root and end of the shoot; location of all new plant cells
Give the formula for Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
