Unit 5 - Sleep Flashcards
Alpha waves
The relative slow brain waves of a relaxed mind
How often do we cycle through sleep stages?
Every 90 minutes
NREM
Non-rapid eye movement sleep; encompasses all sleep stages except for REM sleep
NREM 3
Deepest sleep; longest during first cycle (delta waves)
REM sleep
Also called paradoxical sleep; recurring stage during which we dream; increase as night goes on
Sleep theory: sleep protects
Humans were better hiding at night
Sleep theory: sleep helps us recuperate
The brain literally recuperates; neurons have time to repair themselves
Sleep theory: sleep helps restore and rebuild fading memories of the day’s experiences
Sleep strengthens memory
Sleep theory: sleep feeds creative thinking
Sleeping makes us smarter; we are able to think clearly and make connections that we would not have been able to do without some rest
Sleep theory: sleep supports growth
During sleep our pituitary gland releases our growth hormones; as we get older, we produce less growth hormones
Insomnia
Persistent problem in falling or staying asleep
