Unit 5 - Dreams Flashcards
Information processing
We sift and sort the day’s experiences into our memory
Physiological function
Provides the brain with periodic stimulation
Neural activation
Believe that dreams are the brain’s attempt to make sense of random neural activity
Cognitive development
Dreams are part of brain maturation
Dream stage 1 - Hypnagogic sensations
Happen during brief NREM 1; these are sensory experiences that happen without stimuli
Dream stage 2 - NREM 2
You are asleep, but not yet in a deep sleep - May dream
Dream stage 3 - NREM 3 (delta waves)
This is where one experiences night terrors
Dream stage 4 - REM
“Dreaming” stage; dreams are most vivid and “real” like in this stage
- Body is aroused but relaxed
- Other than a few twitches, body is still
- On average we spend about 100 min in REM every night
Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
Located in hypothalamus; reacts to bright light and decreases amount of melatonin that the pineal gland releases
- Social media
- artificial light
