What is a need?
Any conditon inherent,that is essential and necessary for life, development and well-being
Need cared for= well-being maintained and enhance
Neglected= harm that disrupts physical or psychological well-being
How do our psychological needs urge us?
Urge us to explore, learn and seek challenges with ultimate goal of emotional growth and satisfaction
What are the two characteristics of psychological needs?
Organic-> living subject and their interaction with the environment (in search for fulfilment we modify our surroundings)
Behavioural motivators -> our natural motivation to learn,grow and develop
How do physiological needs arise?
From biological deficiencies which motivate reactive behaviour to satisfy them
What do psychological needs drive?
Proactive willingness to seek out and interact with an environment which meets our emotional and cognitive needs
What are the 3 key secondary needs
- self determination
- competition
-relatedness
What is self determination ?
- also known as autonomy
- need to experience self- determination and personal gratification in the information and regular in one owns behaviour
What are the three qualities involved with self determination
- perceived locus of causality
- volition
- perceived choice
What is perceived locus of causality?
The understanding of the causal source of the motivated actions
Internal -> for personal satisfaction
External-> for the benefit of others
What is volition?
Free willingness to engage in an activity, where no one is pressured/ coerced to act
What is perceived choice?
It’s the send of choice in flexible environments
- offering choice doesn’t guarantee an increase if options do not reflect their values -> no satisfaction
Relationships with other important figures in you life can be understood as autonomy…
Supportive or controlling
What is competence/ competition
- need to interact effectively with the environment
- reflect desire to exercise one’s abilities and skills and seeking optimal challenges
What motivation does competence generate?
To develop improve and refine personal skills
What are characteristics of key environmental events for competence?
- optimal challenge, high structure and high tolerance for failure
What is flow(competence)
Psychological state charcaterised by
- maximum enjoyment and intense concentration
- arises when challenge and ability are high
What is essential to satisfy need for competence and how does it affect people?
- positive feedback and perception of progress satisfies competence
- people willing to seek out and master challenges which leads to growth and development
What is relatedness
Need to establish close emotional ties and bonds with other people
Reflects desire to be emotionally connected and interpersonally involved in caring relationships
How is relatedness activated and how is it satisfied ?
- activated by mere interaction
- satisfied by confining that social ties involve interest and affection
Why is relatedness important?
Supports internalisation, which is the process by which a person adopts another persons beliefs, values etc.
What makes a good day?
Psychological needs provide the psychological nutrients to experience a good day
What are social needs?
Need not born with but shaped through experiences, socialisation opportunities and individual development
Leads to valuing positive emotional experiences
How are social needs affects throughout our life?
- early experiences activate but not establish
- emerge and change over time
How are social needs experienced once acquired?
- emotional and behavioural potentials that activate in response to specific situational incentives
Eg date-> need for intimacy , inspirational speech -> need for power
