2
Q
Uterine cycle
A
Menstrual stage Proliferative stage (ends at ovulation) Secretory stage (begins at ovulation; ends at menstruation)
3
Q
Leutinizing Hormone (LH)
A
male - acts on Leydig (interstitial) cells to secrete testosterone
female - stimulates thecal cells to convert cholesterol to androgens
- stimulates corpus luteum to produce progesterone
4
Q
Sertoli (aka sustentacular) cells
A
- form tight junctions to create a blood-testes barrier
- provide nourishment for developing sperm (metabolize glucose to lactate for sperm)
- secrete seminiferous tubule fluid into lumen (flushes the released sperm from tubule into the epididymis for storage)
- androgen-binding protein – helps maintain a high level of testosterone in seminiferous tubule
- control for spermatogenesis - both testosterone & FSH act on them.
- Release inhibit, which acts in negative feedback to regulate FSH secretion
- during fetal development, secrete Mullein-inhibiting factor
5
Q
development of sperm
A
spermatogonia -> spermatocytes -> spermatids -> spermatozoa
6
Q
last stage of spermatogenesis
A
spermiogenesis – spermatids lose excess cytoplasm, form a tail, & become motile sperm
7
Q
3 male accessory glands
A
- prostate gland
- Bulbourethral gland
- seminal vesicle
8
Q
Leydig (aka interstitial) cells
A
produce androgens
