Stanza
Lines in a poem usually referred to as stanzas
Form
The way the poems words are laid out on the page when reading
Traditional
Traditional poetry contains stanzas with the same amount of lines or there is a pattern in the stanzas
Free verse
When a poems form does not look unified
Analogy
A comparison…similes and metaphors are 2 types of analogys
Simile
A comparison using like or as
Metaphor
Shows comparison by stating that one thing is something else
Personification
To give an object human or life like qualities
Hyperbole
A fancy word for exaggeration
Symbol
Something concrete that represents an idea or feeling
Alliteration
The repetition of the initial constant sounds in 2 or more neighboring words or syllables
Imagery
Descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the 5 senses
Onomatopoeia
The use of a word that sound like what they are…BANG! or POW!
Idiom
Expression who’s meaning is completely different from what it’s words seem to say.
Cliche
An idea or expression that has been overused to the point where it is boring and corny
