Tries to make people feel like they are better than others
Ex- join the brookside club for seasoned skiers… Because you are way beyond the beginner slopes.
Testimonial
Tells you to base your opinion on what someone else thinks- usually a celebrity
Ex- proactive commercials
Appeals to pity
Persuades by tapping into into peoples compassion for others.
Ex- animal shelter commercials
Bandwagon
Tries to persuade by making people want to do the same thing others do…it urges people to go along with what others are doing.
Ex- everybody is rushing to see POMPEII! You should too!!!
Stereotype
Unfair images of a certain group
Ex- the younger generation is lazy, self entered, and disrespectful
Name calling
Makes accusations but doesn’t give any facts to support the claim
Ex- political ads
Ethical appeal
Tries to gain moral support by linking the claim to a widely accepted value
Ex- buy our new green car…it will save the ozone
Scare tactic
Makes people feel as if their safety, security, or health is in danger
Ex- if the bill is passed, the quality of our schools will decline.

A strong emotion or desire to take action
