unit 5- natural resources Flashcards
what is a renewable resource
resources that replenish themselves after being used
what is a non-renewable resource
resources that do not replenish themselves after being used
example or renewable resources
solar and tidal energy
example or non-renewable resources
oil, coal, nuclear energy
what is a primary industry
the industry that gets the resource from the beginning by mining or fishing or however it is recovered from nature
what is a secondary industry
the industry that manufactures the product and makes it ready to sell
what is a tertiary industry
the industry that ships or sells the product
why was fishing on the east coast so good
the ocean water off the east coast off canada were one of the worlds greatest fishing ground for 2 reasons. first a large range of fishing banks (water under 200m). second sunlight shines to the bottom of the ocean in this area which is ideal for plankton and attracts fish
what is west coast fishing
what collapsed in the fishing industry on the east coast
the east coast fishery collapsed in 1991. this was due to over-fishing, improved technology, uncontrolled foreign fishing, distructive fishing and changes in natural conditions. the gouvernment was forced to halt all fishing of northern cod and put major restrictions on all fishing in the area.
what is canada’s position in the world and it’s impact
canada is a leader in natural resources and provides many of these resources to other places in the world. due to its large amount of land being the second biggest country in the world it has so many natural resources with a population that uses barely any. canada’s population is relatively small compared to how much land it has.
what are changes and trends in farming
types of logging
ancaster’s forest region
environmental impacts of logging
what is sustained yield management
use of a renewable resource at a rate that allows the resource to renew itself.
what are the 3 types of mining
strip mining
open pit mining
underground mining
what is strip mining
used in minerals located near the surface such as oil sands where strips of land are removed by machines or blasting to access the mineral
what is open pit mining
used for minerals near the surface and slightly deeper such as coal where pits are dug to retrieve the mineral
what is underground mining
used to extract minerals found deep beneath such as potash the earth where shafts and tunnels are needed
location of minerals (canadian shield)
The Canadian Shield is one of the world’s richest areas in terms of minerals such as nickel, gold, silver, and copper.
what is the best region for fishing in the east coast
the grand banks is best and is known for its production of codfish
what is verticle integration
situation whereby a company owns and operates every step in the process required to make the product
what does true soil consist of
minerals
air
moisture
bacteria
