Rubis Report
Marques de Rubi was sent to inspect all East Texas missions after the Seven Year War. He recommended that all East Texas missions should be closed and settlers should move to San Antonio.
Founding of Nacodoches
Gil Y’ Barbo was a settler in East Texas. He was ordered out of his mission to go to San Antonio after the Rubi inspection. Gil Y’ Barbo refused to go and founded Nacodoches in East Texas.
The Louisiana Purchase
The U.S. purchased the Louisiana territory from France for 15 million. The size of the US doubled and the US shared a border with Texas.
Neutral Ground Agreement
The US thought their border was the Sabine River, but Spain thought it was the Arroyo Hondo River. They ended up deciding that neither country would patrol or control the area. Many criminals snuck in to be safe from the law.
Adam-Onis Treaty
The Adam-Onis Treaty was signed after the Neutral Ground Agreement. The countries realized the land was being used as a safe spot for criminals and decided to come to a new agreement. The US got Florida and the neutral ground in exchange to stay out of Texas.
Grito de Doloros
Grito de Doloros was a speech spoken by Father Miguel Hidalgo. He called for Mexican Independence and to rebel against the British.
The Battle of Medina
The Battle of Medina was the bloodiest battle in Texas History. After Gutierrez and Magee led the Rebellion of the North, Spanish soldier General Arrendondo defeated them and killed and executed everyone associated with the rebellion.
Plan de Iguala
Plan de Iguala was a arrangement made by Agustin de Iturbide to establish a Mexican empire. The plan was to declare Mexico independent from Spain, for Mexican people to have equal rights, and that Catholicism would be the official religion of Mexico.
Treaty of Cordoba
The Treaty of Cordoba was signed in 1821, declaring Mexico independent from Spain. Spain no longer had control over Mexico and Texas became a part of Mexico.
Moses Austin
Moses Austin was nicknames “the Grandfather of Texas” for coming up with the idea to bring Anglo American settlers into Texas. He thought they would come to Texas because of all the cheap land.
Stephen F. Austin’s Colony
Stephen F. Austin was the first empresario to lead people to Texas. The Spanish sent Erasmo Seguin to help him pick land. He was also Moses Austin’s son and known as “the Father of Texas”. He brought the “Old 300” to Texas.
Mexico’s Government
A debate rose when Mexico gained independents on how it should be governed. The two sides were Federalists and Centralists. Federalists took power first and wrote a new constitution for Mexico in 1824 that would affect Texas.
Constitution of 1824
The official religion was Catholicism, It was a Federal Republic, It divided Mexico into 19 States, and it created the state of Coahuila, y Tejas.
State Constitution Law of 1825
The Goal of the Constitution law was to gather colonists to move to Texas without an empresario by giving them up to 4,428 acres of land for just $30. Most people still chose to use an empresario because they didn’t speak the language.
Gutierrez-Magee Expedition
Gutierrez and Magee created the Republic Army of the North. Together they captured East Texas missions and declared Texas independent from Spain.
