Unit 5- Kinetics Flashcards
What does the plot of a zero order reaction look like?
Plot of reactant concentration vs time is a linear line.
What does the plot of a first order reaction look like?
Plot of ln of reactant concentration vs time is a linear line.
What does the plot of a second order reaction look like?
Plot of reciprocal of reactant concentration vs time is a linear line.
How do you determine the order of the chemical reaction from a plot?
By looking at the variable in the y-axis and determining whether a linear graph occurs.
Zero order reactions are represented by what equation
[A]t - [A]0 = -k/t
What is the activated complex?
The point at which the bonds of the reactants are partially broken and bonds of the products are partially formed; form of products will be committed here
What factors influences the reaction rate?
Concentration, Catalysts, Surface Areas, Temperature
What is the activation energy?
The difference between the energy of the reactants and activated complex
What is enthalpy?
The difference between the energy of the reactants and products
When is a reaction considered exothermic?
When heat or thermal energy is released from the overall reaction.
Energy of products - Energy of reactants is negative
When is a reaction considered endothermic?
When heat or thermal energy is inputted into the overall reaction
Energy of products - Energy of reactants is positive
What does the collision theory states?
The rate of reaction is influenced by any factor that changes the number of collisions Concentration Catalysts Surface Area Temperature
How do you determine the overall order of the reaction?
Add the exponents of the rate law together to determine the overall order.
How does increasing temperature increases the rate of reaction?
Increased temperature results in increased collisions which increases the rate of reaction.
How does increasing the surface area increases the rate of reaction?
Increased SA results in increased collisions which increases the rate of reaction.
