A

Why is food processed?

A

Food is processed for OUR CONVENIENCE.

  1. To make it EDIBLE, ready to eat / quick to prepare
    (eg. cornflakes)
  2. To make it LAST longer (eg. tinned pineapple)
  3. To improve its NUTRITIONAL value (eg. yoghurt)

What are fortified foods?

A

Foods with added VITAMINS & MINERALS to raise or restore their nutrient content.

Why are foods fortified?

A
  • Foods can LOSE some of their nutrients during processing.
  • The MORE it is processed, the less nutritious it becomes.
  • By ADDING vitamins & minerals, the nutrient content is raised or restored.
