Unit 5 (Ecology) Flashcards
what is ecology
the study of relationships among living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment
what is organismal ecology?
Considers how an organism’s structure, physiology, and behavior meet environmental challenges
what is population ecology?
considers factors affecting population size over time
what is a population?
a group of individuals of the same species living in an area
what is community ecology
considers the whole array of interacting species in a community
What is a community
a group of populations of different species in an area
what is ecosystem/landscape ecology
focuses on the exchanges of energy, materials, & organisms within & across ecosystems
What is the purpose of the light on an angular fish?
It is a lure to guide fish, a predation tactic
How is the mating of an angular fish an example of organismal ecology?
The male attaches to the female and does not let go, since finding a mate in the intense dark is so difficult. The male provides sperm and the female provides nourishment in this symbiotic relationship
what is global ecology
concerned with the biosphere, or global ecosystem, which is the sum of all the planet’s ecosystems
what is an example of population ecology?
the decrease in a single population due to poaching or destruction of habitat like tigers, turtles and rhinos
what is an example of community ecology?
the beetle eater pisses off the elephant to flush out the beetles when the elephant stomps the ground
what is an example of ecosystem/landscape ecology?
the conversion of forestation into agriculture
what is another example of community ecology?
the interaction of bioluminescent mushrooms and bugs that it attracts
what is an example of a global ecosystem?
The impact of global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps creating more global warming and the lowering of the sea’s pH
