Unit 5 - Defence Against Disease Flashcards
How does the skin help defend the body from pathogens?
It is a barrier and produces antimicrobial secretions
How does the nose help defend the body from pathogens?
It traps particles which could contain pathogens
How does the stomach help defend the body from pathogens?
Produces acid which kills the majority of pathogens which enter through the mouth
How do white blood cells help to defend against pathogens in the body?
- Phagocytosis
- Antibody Production
- Antitoxin Production
What is phagocytosis?
The process in which a white blood cell engulfs a pathogen and destroys it
What is a vaccine?
A small amount of dead or inactive pathogens into the body to trigger an immune response
What is a placebo?
A fake, sugar drug
When a new drug is discovered, what two phases must the drug go through?
- Pre Clinical Testing
- Clinical Testing
During drug testing, what are scientists trying to find out?
- Toxicity
- Efficacy
- Dosage
During pre-clinical trials, what is used to test the drug?
- Cells
- Tissues
- Live Animals
