Unit 5 C2 Material Properties Key Terms Flashcards
Define the term ductile.
Ductile means the material may be drawn out into a wire as the atoms can slide over each other. It is deformed under tensile stress.
Define fatigue.
This is progressive and structural damage of a material that can occur with relatively low levels of stress if there is repeated loading and unloading.
Define brittle.
The material cannot be permanently stretched. It will break soon after the elastic limit.
Define plastic deformation.
When the stress is removed, a change in an objects shape and size is permanent. It does not return to its original shape.
Define creep.
Occurs when a solid material under constant stress moves slowly and deforms permanently over time.
Define strength.
This is the maximum stress the material can bear. This occurs just before the material fractures and fails.
Define elastic limit.
The point on the stress strain curve, beyond which a material begins to suffer plastic deformation, and so will not return to its original shape.
Define malleable.
The ability of a material to be formed by drawing into new shapes, by compressive forces such rolling, hammering, or stamping.
Define elasticity.
This is when a sample that has been deformed by a force returns to its original shape when the force causing the deformation is removed.
