Unit 5 - 5.05 Types of Climates Flashcards
six different types of climates
Tropical Climate Dry Climate Mild Climate Continental Climate Polar Climate Mountain Areas
Dry Climates
Dry climates are places where the amount of precipitation is less than the amount of evaporation.
A desert has this type of climate.(very little water)
Amount of Sunlight Determines Climate
Places that are closer to the equator have a warmer climate. The main reason for this is that the equator receives more direct sunlight than places near the poles.
When a location gets more direct sunlight, it will get more heat from the sun. Florida is closer to the equator than is Canada. Because of this, Florida receives more direct sunlight and has a warmer climate.
two basic types of tropical climates
Tropical Rain Forest
Tropical Monsoon
Tropical Rain Forest
Tropical rain forests are tropical climates that get at least 2.5 inches of rain every month.
Above 65 degree F every month.
Tropical Monsoon
Tropical monsoons are tropical climates that have a rainy season and a dry season.
Above 65 degree F every month.
Tropical Monsoon Seasons
Rainy season in May, June, July, August, and September.
Dry season in November, December, January, February, March, and April.
Tropical climates are ____ ______ in the United States.
- not common
- the southern tip of Florida is considered to have a tropical climate.
mild climates
places which have
- warm summers (higher than 50°F) and
- cool winters (temperature between 27ºF and 64°F).
The difference in summer and winter temperatures are caused by the amount of direct sunlight which places receive.
____ climates receive direct sunlight from the sun during the summer and a little less direct sunlight during the winter.
Mild climates receive direct sunlight from the sun during the summer and a little less direct sunlight during the winter.
Southeastern part of the United States is considered to have a mild climate.
continental climates
places which have
- warm summers (higher than 50°F) and
- very cold winters (below 27°F)
Continental climates receive direct sunlight during the summer and DO NOT get direct sunlight during the winter.
These places are considered to have a continental climate.
- Northeastern part of US
- Canada
polar climates
places that are cold year round (colder than 50°F).
These climates are found near the North and South Poles of the Earth.
These places are cold year round because they do not receive direct sunlight.
mountain climates
Mountains increase the altitude of a particular area.
As we learned earlier, the higher the altitude of a place is, the colder the climate will be.
Because of this, mountains areas can have just about any type of climate.
smaller mountains
will have a warmer climate
