What is sampling?
Sampling is a practice, perhaps most prominent in hip-hop, in which a segment of some existing recording is excerpted and mixed into a new recording (digital made it easy, but lead to a rise in cases of copyright infringement)
What is important about MTV?
cable, music videos, focus on look of rock, not the music (1980s) Had their own series, like Beavis and Butthead, Real World, Jackass, Unplugged
What is a sequencer?
a programmable electronic device for storing sequences of musical notes, chords, or rhythms and transmitting them when required to an electronic musical instrument.
What is a loop?
In electroacoustic music, a loop is a repeating section of sound material. Short sections of material can be repeated to create ostinato patterns. (instead of playing them over and over)
What is break dancing?
performing athletic movements on a piece of cardboard or hard plastic. Popular in with hip-hop and rap culture
What is moshing?
listeners running into one another and diving off of the stage. Seemed chaotic and violent to observers. (popular in the punk/hardcore scene)
What is the difference between an MC and a DJ?
DJ ‘“ stands for disc jockey. He is someone who plays pre-selected music for an audience. He may also make comments on the music or the crowd to which he is playing.
MC ‘“ stands most often for master of ceremonies. He keeps an event rolling along by introducing functionaries and interacting with the audience.
