Topography
An area’s land features (Ex: Mountains)
Climate regions
An area that has similar climate patterns based on its latitude and location on a continent (Ex: tropical, dry, temperate, continental, and polar)
Commercial agriculture
agriculture practice that focuses on producing crops and raising animals for the market for others to purchase
Subsistence agriculture
Agricultural practice that provides crops and livestock to feed one’s family and close community using fewer mechanical resources and more human labor
Central business district
The central location where the majority of consumer services are located in a city because a location attracts them
Bid-rent theory
The relationships between land value, commercial location, and transportation using a slope to determine land costs (Closer to market=higher cost of rent)
Intensive agriculture
An agriculture practice in which farmers expend a great deal of effort to produce as much yield as possible
Plantation agriculture
Large scale commercial farming of one crop grown for markets often distant from plantation
Monocropping
The cultivation of one or two crops that are rotation seasonally (Ex: corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton)
Crop rotation
The varying of crops from year to year to allow for the soil’s nutrients to restore
Extensive agriculture
An agricultural practice with little investment in labor and capital that results in relatively low output
Shifting cultivation
Growing crops or harvesting livestock for a year or two, then moving away from said land when nutrients are gone
Slash and burn
Existing vegetation is cut down and burned off before new seeds are sown, often used to clear land
Foragers
Nomadic people with mainly plant based diets, along with small animals and fish

The shift from foraging for food to farming about 11,000 years ago, marking the beginning of agriculture
