High Political Efficacy
The belief that one’s political participation really matters- that one’s vote can actually make a difference
Low political efficacy
describes the situation where citzens feel their participation does not matter. Ways to reflect this is low voter turn-out, few true intrest groups, or violation of laws
Political Participation
The many different ways that people take part in politics and government
Voter Turnout
the percentage of eligible citizens who actually vote in a given election
15th Amendent (1870)
U.S. cannot prevent a person from voting becaue of race, color, or creed
creed- religous belief
17th Amendment
Passed in 1913 - Calls for the direct election of senators by the voters instead of their election by state legislatures
SEventeen- SEnator
19th Amendment (1920)
Gave women the right to vote
Maine and Nebraska
Select senators based in the winner of the popular vote in the state.
The only two states that don’t use the winner-take-all system for the Electoral College in presidential elections
Political Consulatant
A proffesional political adviser who,** for a fee, works on an area of a candidate’s campaign.** Political consultants include capaign managers, pollsters media advisers, and “get out the vte” organizers.
Voting based on the imagined future performance of a candidate
Prospective Voting
501c(4) Committees
Non-profit groups that also engage in issue advocacy. Under section 501c(4) of the federal tax code, such a group may spend up to half of its revenue for political purposes
Issue Advocacy- promoting a particular position or an issue, paid for by interest groups or individuals but not by candidates.
Candidate - centered politics
politics that focuses directly on the candidates, their issues, and characte rather than actual issues facing the government
The electoral advantage a candidate enjoys by virtue of being an incumbent, over and above his or her other personal and political characteristics
Incumbency Advantage
What is a Pac?
Political Action Committee- group collecting money and giving it to favorable candidates
Lobbying
Engaging activities aimed at influenceing public officials especially legislators and the policies they enact
