Unit 5 Flashcards
System of equations
Multiple equations of lines whose solution is where they all intercept/overlap
How many solutions does this system have?
y = 2x + 2
2y = 4x + 4
Infinite (they are the same equation)
What is graphing to solve a system of equations?
Graphing is where you graph the equations and see if/where they overlap.
What is substitution to solve a system of equations?
Substitution is where you solve for one variable in terms of another and “substitute”/plug it in to the other.
Solve this system:
y = 2x
4y = 3x + 2
(2/5, 4/5)
Example of one equation with 2 variables
y = 3x + 2
(can be anything with 2 variables though)
What are the methods to solve a system of equations?
Elimination, substitution, graphing
How is the solution to a system represented?
(x, y)
Ordered pair
How can you approximate the solution of a system using tables?
Find where the equation with the bigger y-value switches. The middle of those 2 x-values is the x-solution, and the middle of the 2 y-values at the point where the switch happens is the y-solution.
If the y-values are the same, just use the x and y values at that point.
What are the three operations involved in elimination?
Multiplication, addition, subtraction
How many solutions does this system have:
y = 2x + 2
2y = 4x + 5
Zero
