Unit 3 and 4 Flashcards
Point-Slope Formula
y - y1 = m(x - x1)
m = slope of the line
Slope of a line given 2 points
(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
The slope of a line where the y value decreases as the x value increases
Negative
The slope of a line where its y value increases with its x value
Positive
The slope of a line where its y value remains constant
Zero/constant
The slope of a line where its x value stays constant
Undefined (since it would be n/0 which is undefined)
Slope-intercept formula
y = mx + b
, where m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept
y-intercept
The point where the line “intercepts” the y-axis
x-intercept
The point where the line “intercepts” the x-axis
Where do you shade in a linear inequality where y is the greater value?
Above the line, exclusive
Where do you shade in a linear inequality where y is the greater or equal value?
Above the line, inclusive
What does a dotted line signify in a linear inequality?
The points on the dotted line are not part of the inequality (exclusive)
What is the point-slope equation, given the points (-6, 7) and (9, -2)?
y - 7 = (-3/5)(x + 6)
OR
y + 2 = (-3/5)(x - 9)
What is slope?
Rate of change of a line
Rise over run
What is an inequality?
Expresses that the two sides are different and not equal
