Unit 5 Flashcards
Nasal Canula
delivers 22-50% oxygen
flow rate: 1-6LPM
should humidify >4LPM
Simple Oxygen Mask
delivers 40-60% oxygen
flow rate: 6-10L
must humidify
Venturi/Venti Mask
oxygen measured specifically by percentages (specific flow rate correlated with percentage
anywhere from 4-12 liters
do not need to humidify bc it is so specific
interchanging part that correlates with percent of oxygen
What mask is commonly used on people with COPD
Venture Mask
Reservoir (Non-Rebreather) Mask
up to 90+% oxygen flow rate: 10-15 LPM non-humidified oxygen flutter valves MUST be in place reservoir bag hold 100% oxygen
What must happen before you can put a non-rebreather mask on patient?
the bag must be inflated fully (otherwise they are breathing in CO2 that they just breathed out)
What type of mask is used on respiratory distress patients?
Non-rebreather mask (aka COVID patients)
What type of oxygen device do you use when a patient can no longer protect their own airway?
artificial airways
oral or nasalpharnygeal
When is an oral airway used?
unconscious clients ONLY
different sizes
What is another name for the nasalpharnygeal airway ?
nasal trumpet
Where is nasalpharnygeal airway inserted?
nose on conscious patients
What do you do before inserting nasal trumpets?
check for patency & septum deviation
and size
Purpose of tracheostomy tube
a surgical incision in the windpipe to relieve an obstruction to breathing
temporary or permanent
What are the components of tach?
trach, straps, obturator
What does it mean if a trach is cuffed?
there is an inflated balloon that holds it in place
