What were the policies for the unemployed
FERA (Federal Emergency Act), CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and the PWA (Public Works Administration)
What did the FERA do
The Federal Emergency Relief Act gave $500 million to states to help the unemployed
How did the FERA help the unemployed
Helped them to feed their family in the short time whilst looking for a job
What was the CCC
The Civilian Conservation Corps gave young men outdoor paid jobs
How many young men joined the CCC
500,000 had joined in 1935
What was the PWA
The Public Works Administration was given $3.3 billion to build structures, which created jobs
What did the WPA provide
The Works Progress Administration provided work relief for the unemployed
How much did the WPA spend
$11 billion to employ 8 million Americans
What did the WPA do
Provided 8 million Americans in short-term work, providing them an income and experience as part of the 2nd New Deal. It helped families with their income during the winter
What projects did the WPA invest in
Supplied workers for manual construction projects (e.g. roads, schools, hospitals) and organized training programs for the young
What did the WPA do for women
It helped the arts industry, which were able to go on theatrical trips, and gave women sewing and teaching programs
