Unit 4 Topic 2 Flashcards
What is evolution?
Gradual change in living things over time.
What is macroevolution?
Evolution of large changes in species over a period of time.
When does natural selection occur?
When pressures of environmental selection give advantage to a specific phenotype.
Can the selection of an allele frequency in a gene pool be positive or negative?
Yes
What is stabilizing selection?
When the environment is stable and unchanging
What is directional selection ?
A mode of natural selection where a single phenotype is favored.
What is disruptive selection?
When extreme phenotypes are favored
What is microevolutionary?
Small scale changes in the genetic make up of a population
How does speciation and macroevolutionary change?
By an accumulation of microevolutionary changes over time.
What is divergent evolution?
When two groups of the same species evolve different traits due to different environmental pressures.
What is convergent evolution?
When different species evolve similar traits due to similar environment pressures.
What is parallel evoloution?
When two species that share a common ancestor experience similar environmental pressures
What is coevolution?
When one specie influences the change of another specie.
What is allopatric speciation?
When species separate into two separate groups.
What is sympatric speciation?
All members are in close proximity to another.
