Unit 4, topic 1.3: Gene expression Flashcards
Structural genes
code for any proteins except regulatory genes
Regulatory genes
codes for proteins and other small molecules (microRNA), that control the expression of structural genes
Genes
sections of DNA which code for proteins, expressed when they are transcribed into mRNA, then translated into a protein
Genome
Contains all genetic material in haploid set of chromosomes in an organism, including all its genes and DNA sequences
Exons and their roles
a segment of a DNA or RNA molecule containing information coding for a protein or peptide sequence
Introns and their roles
Any nucleotide sequence with a gene that is not expressed or operative in the final RNA sequence
Introns make it possible to generate multiple proteins from a single genes
