Unit 4 - The processes of life Flashcards
What do all cells contain?
DNA and organelles
What are the parts of an animal cell?
Cytoplasm, mitochondria, nucleus and cell membrane.
What are the parts of a plant cell?
Cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts.
What is meant by the term optimum?
Optimum is the fastest rate at which an enzyme digests.
What is meant by the term denatured?
This is where the active site gets misshapen due to an increase in temperature or pH.
What is the lock and key model?
Where each white blood cell is the lock and has one particular microbe which fits it.
What are the two types of respiration?
Anaerobic and aerobic.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + Water + energy
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> Lactic acid + energy
When is anaerobic respiration used in humans?
When they need more energy for a short amount of time.
What are the three stages of photosynthesis?
- Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll
- The light energy is used to re-arrange the atoms of carbon
- Oxygen is produced as a waste product
What are the three limiting factors to photosynthesis?
Temperature, CO2 concentration and light intensity.
What is diffusion?
The overall movement of substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water from a concentrated solution to a dilute one across a partially permeable membrane.
