What does overrun mean?
to continue beyond allowed time or cost
e.g. Last year our costs overran our budget by almost 35%; overrun = used with costs and budgets
What does outstrip mean?
to exceed e.g. Our sales outlook for next quarter looks very good indeed with demand expected to outstrip supply; outstrip = used with demand and supply
What does oversubscribed mean?
to be applied for in greater quantities than are available e.g. The share issue for Southern Suites IPO on the SET next month is already 15 times oversubscribed; oversubscribed = used with stocks
What does undersell mean?
to offer goods at a lower price than your competition e.g. We are looking at ways of underselling our rivals. No one will be cheaper than us!
What does denationalize mean?
to transfer from public to private ownership e.g. After the collapse of communism in East Germany and its reunification with West Germany, almost every state-owned industry was denationalized.
What does outperform mean?
to perform better than e.g. From 2010 to 2016, Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh stock market outperformed every other stock exchange in Southeast Asia by averaging nearly 18% in return on investment.
What is the difference between the prefixes out- and over-?
out- means better than somebody or something, but over- means too much or more than necessary; out- = positive but over- = negative
- OVER means too much or more than what is necessary/required.
- OUT means better than somebody or something.
What is meant by a mature company?
A mature company is a company that is well-established in its industry, with a well-known product and loyal customer following.
What is meant by a turnaround?
When a company finally experiences a financial recovery after a period of poor performance.
What does a critical mass of users refer to?
The point at which the company becomes self-sustaining.
What is meant by outclass?
to be far superior to e.g. They totally outclassed us in the first half.
