Trail of Tears
Trail: 1838-39

A

The trail of tears was Cherokee Indians forced to give lands up east of Mississippi. Made by Andrew Jackson. 4,000/15,000 died. The picture is an illustration of it.

Polk’s War Message

1846

A

Regarding relations between U.S. and Mexico. Sent Slidell to negotiate Texas border, and buy California.Wouldn’t receive Slidell so Polk attacked, and Mexico retaliated. Polk wanted the land. Eventually, U.S. and Mexico on bad terms, and no trade anymore.

Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions

July 1848, Human Rights Convention

A

According to the great precept of nature: women should be allowed happiness, a station in society, they are men’s equals, can claim intellectual superiority, should be able to address a public audience, they have a right to the elective franchise. All men and women are created equal. Gives an overview of all that man has not allowed women to do. Follows the resolutions and says how women are not allowed these things.

Jackson’s proclamation regarding nullification

Dec. 10, 1832

A

Even though he supported the states’ rights, he felt the federal gov. had to be supreme. Proposed Congress pass a force bill that would allow him to collect a tariff by force if necessary. Any violence in aiding secession was treason. Said constitution created a single gov for all Americans and secession was illegal. Felt SC was taking states rights to extremes and was undermining the structure of the the federal union and the constitution. Disputed states rights to nullify a federal law.

Believed that society forced conformity on people. Basically be yourself. Didn’t think friends were necessary. People should always tell the truth. Be dedicated to the individual.

Monroe Doctrine
Dec. 2, 1823
To congress by James Monroe

A

Warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. Invoked in 1865 when the U.S. gov exerted diplomatic and military pressure in support of the Mexican president. Americans don’t get involved in European affairs if they don’t get involved in ours. Declares the U.S.’s neutrality.

Human Rights not founded on sex

Angelina Grimke 1837

A

Her fundamental perspective on women’s rights as a moral being. Central importance of Christianity and interpretation of scripture. Believes that the regulation of duties for women causes the evils that flows through the world. Said according to scripture women are equal to men. There were only humans, in Jesus’s eyes no genders.

Jeffersons Indian Policy

1803

A

To Harrison, governor of the Indiana Territory. Live in peace with the Indians, and draw them to agriculture and farms. Trade them necessities for land. Incorporate them as citizens.

Question in controversy: involves interest of whole nation. Right of exporting American productions to foreign markets. Ships being captured by maritime supremacy. Calls for war and interposition of gov. Says E turned Indians against A. War will have advantages.

The Pennsylvania Gazette- from the Indian Prophet and his Doctrine (1812)

A

Native Americans were angry about the loss of land, and the continued contact with Americans undermining their culture. This was addressed to different tribes of Indians. He hates Americans for taking away their lands. Animals such as dear and bear were not meant for the white men. Explains the differences between the 2 cultures.

This lithograph shows the unfortunate stages of alcoholism. It was drawn in January of 1896 to the growing anti-alcoholism sentiment and produced the 18th amendment. It was a spectacular failure and was repealed by the 21st amendment.
