LIKE A COUNTRY. a state is a stable legal organization and territorial political community
define the concept of “sovereignity”
the authority of a state to govern itself
what is a colony? give examples
a colony is a “state” controlled by another state, usually a far-off state
(Britain controlling US colonies, British Virgin Isles, etc)
define “stateless nation” and give examples
NATION OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE NO STATE OF THEIR OWN (Navajo, Kurbs)
define “multinational state” and give examples
A STATE THAT IS HOME TO MANY NATIONALITIES (u.s.a)
define “multi state nation” and give examples
A NATION THAT OCCUPIES MULTIPLE STATES (Koreans, North and South)
what is a de facto line?
where one country has occupied part of another country past their border, and is controlling the land up to that new “borderline”, but the border doesn’t show it on a map
what four things must a state have?
- defined area
- permanent population
- recognition by other states
- sovereignity
what is a superimposed boundary
a boundary created with disregard for the people living there before
what is a subsequent boundary
separated groups of people based on ethnicity (to reduce tensions)
what is an antecedent boundary
existed before the present settlement
what is a consequent boundary
political border established as a consequence of an agreement: U.S-Mexico border, from war
what is a relict boundary

what are some effects of imperialism?
POLITICAL: political unrest (fav ethnic group and leave)
LANGUAGE: lingua francas, borders drawn disregarding common langs, indiginous tongues
ECONOMIC: less developed countries, because Brits robbed land+people of resources and then left the native inhabitants with nothing
CULTURAL: multi-national states trying to live in same borders created by Brits

the line between people who speak different languages
what is a geometric border
a boundary created using lines of longitude and latitude (STRAIGHT LINES ON MAPS)
where are landlocked states most common and why
Africa, because of imperialism/colonization
what are first order—third order divisions?
First Order: States
Second Order: Counties
Third Order: Cities
what does autonomous/semi autonomous mean?
a first-order division (STATE) within a coutnry that has SOME DEGREE OF FREEDOM FROM CENTRAL GOV. reservations, Cuba, CO, etc.
does SIZE OF A STATE affect how it will be unitary or federal?
NO
what is “unitary” and “federal”?
Unitary - all the power of a country rests in a CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
Federal - power is DISTRIBUTED between STATE + FEDERAL GOVS
