Unit 4: Outcome 2 Flashcards
The dignity of the human person
The person is not an isolated individual but a social being, nurtured in family and linked with many others. Genesis 1:15 depicts God’s joy in creating us in his image.
“Life, especially human life, belongs to God; whoever attacks human life attacks gods very self”
Pope John Paul 2
Community and the common good
While the dignity of the human person is always affirmed, individuals also live in common with others, and the rights of individuals must be balanced with the wider common good of all.
“The common good embraces the sum total of all conditions of social life.” Pope John XXII
The preferential option for the poor
The Catholic Church teaches that those who are least advantaged or suffering most have a special claim on us. The preferential option for the poor involves giving preference to the needs of those who are suffering.
“ those who are more influential because they have greater share of goods and common services should feel responsible for the weaker and be ready to share with them all they posses.” Pope John Paul 2
