What was the Seven Year’s War?
The Seven Years’ War was a conflict between the powerful nations of Great Britain and France for control of North America.

- France loses Louisiana
- France is no longer a colonial power in North America
- Spain doesn’t need East Texas missions & presidios
What was Marques de Rubi’s report?
Rubi was sent to inspect the Texas missions after the 7 Years’ War. He recommended that all Texas missions be abandoned, except San Antonio & Goliad. He also said that all settlers in East Texas be moved to San Antonio.
What was Nacogdoches?
In 1779, Gil Y’Barbo founded Nacogdoches with a settlement of 350 settlers at the location of the abandoned East Texas missions.
What was the American Revolution?
The American Revolution happened in 1776, when Britain’s 13 colonies in North America rebelled against British rule.
What did the Spanish do for the 13 colonies to defeat Britain?
Spain allowed American ships to use ports in New Orleans. They gave them supplies and money. They also led Spanish troops against the British along the coast.
What was the Louisiana Purchase?
In 1803, the U.S. purchased Louisiana Territory from France for 15 million dollars.
What was the Neutral Ground agreement?
It was a zone between the Sabine River and Arroyo Hondo that neither Spain or the U.S. had control over.
Why was the Neutral Ground agreement formed?
The U.S. and Spain couldn’t agree on the border between Texas and Louisiana.
What were some problems of the Neutral Ground agreement?
With nobody to patrol this territory: Smugglers, outlaws, and fugitives were safe from legal authority here.
What was the Adams-Onis Treaty.
In 1819, the U.S. and Spain signed the Adams-Onis Treaty, ending the Neutral Ground Agreement.
What did the U.S. get from the Adams-Onis Treaty?
The U.S. received Florida and the Sabine river as the boundary of Louisiana.
What did the Spain get from the Adams-Onis Treaty?
The U.S. had to promise to leave Texas alone.
What was a filibuster?
Filibusters are people who go to another country and try to take it over by waging war. They do this WITHOUT the support of their home country.

Philip Nolan
What did Philip Nolan come to Texas for?
He came to Texas to capture wild horses and sell them for a profit. (He had permission at first)
Why did Spain tell Philip Nolan to not come back in 1800?
His friendship with a U.S. Army commander made Spain suspicious (They thought he was an American Spy)
What happened to Philip Nolan in 1801?
He enters Texas and is killed by the Spanish.
Why did Mexico want independence from Spain?
- Spain was too far away to help citizens in New Spain.
- Spanish King forced colonists to pay heavy taxes and he took money from their churches.
- Colonists were excluded from the best jobs, the class system kept most of New Spain’s citizens in poverty.
What was the Grito de Dolores?
Father Miguel Hidalgo called for Mexican citizens to fight for independence from Spain. His speech was known as the Grito de Dolores.

The Father of Mexican Independence.

Who’s James Long?
The group declared Texas independent and elected Dr. James Long as its president. After a string of battles, Long and his men were surrounded by the Spanish Army. Long was taken to a Mexican prison where he was shot and killed by a guard 6 months later.

He wanted to declare Mexico independent from Spain. He also wanted Mexican people would have equal rights. Catholicism would be the official religion of Mexico.
