What are two parts of communication?
Speaking and listening.
Guidelines for improving your listening skills:
(1) Focus on the conversation.
(2) Do not interrupt.
(3) Focus on the speakers words rather on what your response will be.
(4) Show emotion when appropriate.
(5) Show that you are engaged.
Things to identify as you listen:
(1) Focus on the main ideas.
(2) Catch supporting points.
(3) Make a mental summary.
(4) Ask questions.
(5) Take notes.
(6) Think and evaluate.
What is constructive criticism?
Helpful comments, both positive and negative, offered in a friendly manner for the purpose of helping the speaker improve his message.
Guidelines for offering constructive criticism:
(1) Offer both positive and negative comments.
(2) Be specific.
(3) Be kind.
Guidelines for receiving constructive criticism:
(1) Do not take the comment personally.
(2) Do take the comments practically.
(3) Be gracious to the one offering comments.
