Unit 4 - Lesson 5: Carbon Flashcards
(11 cards)
Finish this statement:
“The amount of carbon and nitrogen on Earth is (?).”
The amount of carbon and nitrogen on Earth is FIXED. I.E. It doesn’t change.
What two elements are essential for living organisms?
Carbon & Nitrogen
What two elements are recycled between all the abiotic and biotic components on Earth?
Carbon & Nitrogen.
What process in plants requires carbon?
Photosynthesis. They take CO2 from the air and convert it to glucose. Plants use this to make energy (ATP) by respiration & other important molecules.
What is a plants role in a food web? How does this effect a plant’s lifespan?
A plant is a producer. This means organisms in higher trophic levels eat the plants to obtain the carbon for the same reason.
Name 5 molecules that contain carbon.
DNA.
RNA.
Amino Acids.
Protein.
ATP.
How does carbon leave and enter living organisms?
Carbon leaves living organisms and enters back into the air as CO2 through respiration.
How does respiration occur when an organism dies or excretes waste?
Decomposers decompose the organic (living or once living) matter. This gives them the carbon they need for their own respiration. Inherently releasing CO2 back into the air.
Even animals that died millions of years ago can release their carbon back into the air when they are burnt as fossil fuels. What is this called?
Combustion.
What does releasing too much carbon into our atmosphere cause?
The greenhouse effect
Draw a diagram of different ways carbon is released into the air (include photosynthesis, combustion, fossilisation, decomposers and respiration).
