Responsible Government
A government that answers to the people rather than to colonial governors.
Quiet Revolution
A period of intense social, political, and economic change in Quebec. During this period, which lasted from about 1960 to 1966, Quebecois began to assert their rights and affirm and promote their language and culture.
Rene Levesque
Served as premier of the Canadian province of Quebec from 1976 to 1985. In addition, he founded the Parti Quebecois, a political party that aims to make Quebec an independent French-speaking nation.
Offical Languages Act
Gave English and French offical equal government languages in Canada.
Pierre Trudeau
Canadian prime minster who made French an official language to appease Quebecois secessionists.
Louis Riel
Métis leader, founder of Manitoba, central figure in the NORTH-WEST REBELLION.
The Indian Act
Federal legislation related to the rights and status of First Nations peoples (“status Indians”), first passed in 1876 and amended several times.

an organization founded and united for a specific purpose.
Patriated
Transferred from the control of the British government to that of the Canadian government.
Equalization Payments
Revenues from federal taxes that are paid by the Canadian government to less prosperous provinces to ensure that public services are more or less equally available to all Canadians.

People who believe that a country’s businesses and industries should be protected against foreign interests.

1995 Referendum
Quebec Referendum
Second referendum to ask voters in Quebec whether they should proclaim national sovereignty or stay a part of Canada.
Charlottetown Accord
An agreement on constitutional change made between the provinces and the federal government in 1990. It failed.
Meech Lake Accord
A package of constitutional amendments that would define Quebec as a distinct society within Canada. Ultimently Failed.
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Came into force on 17 April 1982. The only Charter of Rights entrenched in the Canadian Constitution.
Aboriginal self-government
Giving aboriginal governments the same opportunity as Canadian governments.
