Unit 4: Electricity Flashcards
What is current measured in?
Using?
Amperes, A
Ammeter connected in SERIES
What is electric current?
Current is the flow of free electrons (negatively charged)
What is voltage?
Voltage is the measure of how much electrical energy a certain amount of electrons can transfer as they flow around a circuit
Higher V = More electrical energy
What is voltage measured in?
Using?
Volts, V
Voltmeter connected in parallel
What is Resistance?
Measure of how difficult it is for current to flow through a wire or device
More Resistance = less current because it is more difficult for it to flow
What is Resistance measured in?
Ohms
♎️
What is a series circuit?
There is only one path and the bulbs (b1 and b2)
If b1 stops working so does b2
What is a parallel circuit?
More than one path and the circuit is divided into branches
Bulbs b1 and b2 are in SERIES but b3 is in parallel
If b3 stops working b2 and b1 will still continue to work
When measuring the current on a series circuit what happens?
All the readings for current are the same as there is only one path for the current to flow
In a series circuit where are the voltmeters?
Connected across the component e.g bulb or battery
In a parallel circuit the ammeter is connected in?
Series
What do Variable Resistors do?
They are components that can be out into a circuit to control the CURRENT and the VOLTAGE
What is the equation for working out resistance?
What is it called?
Resistance = voltage ➗ current R = V ➗ I
Ohms Law
Which is directly proportional, current and…
Voltage
On a directly proportional graph of current and voltage list 4 things you could say..
- Directly proportional
- If current is doubled so is voltage
- Temperature of wire remains constant
- Resistance remains constant (obeys ohms law)
