Unit 2 - Forces Flashcards
List different types of force
Friction
Air resistance
Weight
Upthrust
What is a force?
A force is a push or a pull acting on an object
What is force measured in?
Newtons, N
Who came up with the 3 Laws of motion?
Sir Isaac Newton
What is Resultant Force?
Resultant force is when more than one force is acting upon an object
What are the rules for working out same/opposite directions?
Same direction ➡️ ADD
Opposite direction ➡️ SUBTRACT
What is Newton’s First Law?
A body will remain at REST or CONTINUE to move at a CONSTANT VELOCITY unless acted upon by an EXTERNAL (resultant) force
What is inertia?
1st law
The resistance of any object to any change in its motion
Example of Inertia?
A cruise ship, it’s very difficult to move, accelerate, decelerate, change it’s direction etc. (because of its inertia)
What is Momentum?
How much an motion an object has
How to calculate Momentum?
Momentum = mass ✖️ velocity
Units for:
Momentum = Mass x Velocity
P = M ✖️ V
What is Newton’s second law?
The rate of change of momentum is proportional to the (resultant) force applied, it takes place in the direction of the (resultant) force
How to calculate change in Momentum?
2nd law
Force = change in momentum ➗ time
What are the change in Momentum equation units?
F =
Units for:
Force
Time
Change in momentum
Force: Newtons, N
Time : Seconds, S
Change in momentum: kg m/s
What is Mass?
A measure of how much MATTER or material an object has
Measured in kg
What is Weight?
Measure of how large the force of gravity is on an object
Measured in Newtons, N
