Unit 4 - Classical Conditioning Flashcards
Learning
Relatively permanent change in an organism’s behavior due to experience.
Classical Conditioning (Ivan Pavlov)
Organism comes to associate two stimuli.
NS
Stimulus which initially produces no specific response other than focusing attention.
US
Stimulus that automatically and naturally triggers a response.
Ex. Reflex
UR
Unlearned naturally occurring response to the US.
CS
After association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger an unconditioned response.
CR
Learned response to a previously neutral conditioned stimulus (CS).
Acquisition
Neutral stimulus comes to elicit a conditioned response. When a response is first established.
In operant conditioning, the strengthening of a reinforced response.
Higher Order Conditioning
When the conditioned stimulus is paired with the neutral stimulus, creating a second (often weaker) conditioned stimulus.
Extinction
Diminishing of CR.
Spontaneous Recovery
After a rest period, an extinguished CR (salvation) spontaneously recovers.
Generalization
Tendency to respond to stimuli SIMILAR to the CS.
Discrimination
Distinguish between a conditioned stimulus and other stimuli.
