Unit 4 (Chemical Reactions) Flashcards
What is Stoichiometry?
The relationship between the relative quantities of substances taking part in a reaction or forming a compound
What is the Actual Yield?
The amount of product that is actually produced by a chemical reaction
What is Theoretical Yield?
The amount of product that can be made in a chemical reaction based on the amount of limiting reactant
How do you find percent yield?
Actual yield / theoretical yield x 100%
What is a Solution?
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances
What is a Solute?
What is usually the smaller amount, dissolved in a solvent
What is Solvent?
Usually liquid, the larger amount of a substance in which the solute is dissolved
What is an Electrolyte?
A substance that, when dissolved in water, can conduct electricity.
What is a Non-Electrolyte?
A substance that, when dissolved in water, cannot conduct electricity
What is Dissociation?
When ionic compounds are dissolved in water, the anions and cations are separated from each other
ex) Na2S (aq) –> 2 Na (aq) + S (aq)
What is a Dilute Solution?
Solutions that have a small amount of solute compared to solvent
What is a Concentrated Solution?
Solutions that have a large amount of solute compared to solvent
What is the Dilution Formula?
M1 V1 = M2 V2
What is a Precipitation Reaction?
A reaction between two liquids or aqueous solutions that form a solid
What is a Double-Displacement Reaction?
Where the reactants are ionized in a solution and at least one product is a solid, gas, or stable molecular compound. The products are the reactants swapped
ex) AB + CD –> CB + AD
