Unit 1 (Methods and Matter) Flashcards
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Matter
A form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties
Substance
A characteristic that can be used to describe a substance
Property
What is Vaporization?
The process in which liquid turns into gas
What is Condensation?
The process in which gas turns into liquid
What is Sublimation?
The process in which a solid turns into gas
What is Deposition?
The process in which gas turns into solid
What is Freezing?
The process in which liquid turns into solid
What is Melting?
The process in which solid turns into liquid
Made up of only one component and it’s composition is invariant (every sample has the same composition)
Pure Substance
A substance composed of two or more components in proportions that can vary from one sample to another
Mixture
A substance that cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances
Element
A substance that is composed of two or more elements in fixed definite proportions
Compound
A mixture where the composition varies from one region of the sample to another
Heterogeneous
A mixture where all portions of the sample have the same composition and properties
Homogeneous
