Unit 4 Chapter 15 - Forestry Flashcards
Albedo
The reflectiveness of a surface
Biodiversity
A measure of the variety and abundance of species
Canopy
The uppermost layer of vegetation in a forest
Carbon sequestration
The process by which plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store the carbon in wood and other plant tissues
Cellulose
A complex carbohydrate made from chains of glucose molecules
Climax community
The community of organisms at the end of ecological succession
Community Forest
A deliberately managed and planted forest for the benefit of the community
Conifers
Trees that produce their seeds in cones eg pine, spruce and fir trees
Coppicing
The process where trees are cut to ground level every few years. The regrowth produces long narrow stems
Deciduous
The process of shedding all the leaves at the same time of a year
Ecological succession
The sequence of events as a previously uncolonised area gradually changes to eventually develop into a climax community of organisms
Evapotranspiration
The combined movement of water into the atmosphere from the evaporation from surfaces and transpiration from leaves
Forest Parks
Forestry Commission forest areas that are open to the public for recreational use
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
An organisation that certifies sustainable forestry operations
Forestry Commission
The UK governmental organisation that aims to protect and expand forests and woodlands
Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY)
The greatest amount that can be sustainably harvested
National Forest
An area in the East Midlands of England where woodland creation and countryside management is being carried out for the benefit of the local communities and wildlife
NPP
Net Primary Productivity: the energy captured by photosynthesis that is not used in respiration
Pollarding
The process where trees are cut to 4 - 8ft above the ground every few years. The regrowth produces long narrow stems
Primary productivity
The energy captured during photosynthesis
Programme for Belize (PfB)
Independent conservation organisation that manages the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area in Belize, Central America
Stomata
The pore on a leaf through which gases are exchanged and transpiration water is lost
Stratification
Layering, as seen with vegetation layers in forests
Subsistence
Activities that support the people carrying it out, with no tradeable surplus
