unit 4 aos 1: 1c measuring health status Flashcards
mortality
deaths in a population
mortality rate
number of deaths in a given area or period, or from a particular cause
( normally expressed per 100,000)
maternal mortality rate (MMR)
measures number of deaths of women who’re pregnant or in the first 42 days after giving birth or termination
(usually expressed as per 100,000 live births)
under 5 mortality rate (U5MR)
measures number if deaths of children under 5 per 1000 live births
infant mortality rate (IMR)
measures number of deaths of infants between birth and their first birthday
(usually expressed per 1000 live births)
morbidity
refers to ill health in an individual or the levels of ill health in a population/group
morbidity rate
measures how many people are suffering from a particular condition at a particular time
eg,
- illness
- injury
- disability
incidence
number/rate of NEW cases of a disease during a specific period of time
(usually 12 months)
prevalence

- prevalence=total cases (new and existing cases)
life expectancy (LE)
indication of how long a person can expect to live and is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age of death rates don’t change
burden of disease (BOD)
the quantified impact of a disease/injury on a population using the disability adjusted life years measure
DALY
a measure of burden of disease (BOD).
- one DALY=one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury
YLL
years of life lost
- measure of how many years of life are lost due to premature death
YLD
years lost due to disability
- measure of how many years are lost due to illness, injury or disability
DALY=
YLD+YLL
