Level of sophistication in language, word choice, appearance, & delivery of a message
Ex: formal, semi-formal, informal
Formality
The attitude towards a subject.
Ex. Humorous, sentimental, hostile, sympathetic, neutral
Tone
Business-like, high-level vocabulary, very structured.
Ex: Business letter, school communications, informational writing
Formal tone
Very personal, sometimes slang vocabulary
Ex: Notes to friends, text messages
Informal tone
The ability to affect other people’s thinking
Ex: causing positive or negative thinking
Influence
Make someone believe something
Ex: if you graduate from school, you will have a better job and make more money
Persuade (persuasive)
The main point expressed about a topic
Ex: Point of view
Argument
An argument that is not really sound that may still be convincing
Ex: trust me, I know my best friend wouldn’t do that
Rhetorical fallacy
The means of persuasion an argument
Ex: – Emotional – ethical and (right or wrong) – logical
Appeal
Pins on faulty logic (reasoning)
Ex:cats are better than dogs because they’re cuter and cleaner.
Logical fallacy
Unfairly appeals to a person’s emotions
Ex: – You need expensive shoes are people won’t think you are cool
Emotional fallacy
Unreasonable attack on the right is on the Writers own authority or character
Ex: Sarah’s friend was arrested; therefore, there must be a troublemaker.
Ethical fallacy
Fallacy that is a personal attack on a character to distract from the argument
Ex:Mexican, so you can’t tell me the best place to eat pizza.
Ad hominem
A statement in support of particular truth, facts, or claim.
Ex: and actors says he/she uses a product and it works
Testimonial
A fallacy in which there is an overstatement of more than is true.
Ex: all advertisements are misleading
