An animal, object, force of nature, or idea that is given human characteristics EX. The wind whispered her name
Personification
Using extreme exaggeration to express an idea EX. The building was a mile high
Hyperbole
An expression that means something different from the literal meaning of the words EX. The lady was hoping she would catch his eye
Idiom
Repetition of the beginning consonant sounds of words EX. Sally sells sea shells by the seashore
Alliteration
The sequence of events in a story, play, or poem
Plot
Parts of literature that make up a story EX. Symbolism, irony, flashback, etc.
Literary elements
An interruption to a story that tells about something that happens earlier in time

Descriptive language that appeals to our senses

The emotional feeling of a story

Clues in the reading that prepare the reader for events that will happen later

A contrast between the way things seem and the way they really are EX. Saying NICE GUY about someone you don’t like

A struggle between opposing feelings inside the mind of a character

A character struggles against an outside force such as nature, society, or another person
External conflict
The main message of a story or poem that often expresses a life lesson
