Community Organization
the process of the community coming together to mobilze, identify a common need, mobilize resource to reach a common goal for the good of the community, political change in terms of a health need/goal

- membership

what do planners today focus on?
broadening to the community
the more people the better!
resources and skills of many > resources and skills of a few
the need for community organization has increased. why?
- society is icnreasingly independent/individualistic now - we dont like to depend or ask our neighbors or community members for help
- but we can still come together and mobilze when we need to - neighborhood watch
why do communitys have much potential for change
allow for participatory justice and democracy
community organization
- comes from social work re: immigrants/poor people services
- the organization of a community to come together, identify a common need or goal and mobilize resources to achieve it collectively
- not a science but an art of consensus in a democratic process
- act of the community advocating for social, instituational, political change for achieving a common goal
- sometimes issues are too large for small groups or individuals to accomplish by themselves - better in a communities
7 assumptions of community organization
1 . comm have capacity to deal w/ own problems
- communites can and want to change
- communities are active in change
- better if change comes from within (buy in)
- holisitc > fragmented
- need support/help to mobilize
- democracy requires cooperation
