What is a mass structure?
A structure created by piling up or forming similar materials into a specific shape or form. Ex: a beaver dam.
What is a frame structure?
A structure that has a skeleton made of strong materials that support the structure.
What is a shell structure?
A structure that uses a thin carefully shaped outer layer that provides its strength and rigidity.
What are five things a designer must consider when planning a new project?
Aesthetics, safety, cost, materials, and function.
What are four things that must be taken in to account when choosing materials?
Cost, appearance, environmental impact, and energy efficiency.
What are mobile joints?
Joints that allow movement.
What are ridged joints?
Joints that don’t allow movement.
What are the five categories of ridged joints?
Fasteners (Nails, staples, bolts, screws, etc.), interlocking shapes (Lego, paving stones, etc..), ties (thread, string, rope, laces, yarn, etc.) adhesives, (glue, tape, etc.) Melting, (welding, etc.).
What are external forces?
Forces that act on structures from the outside.
What is a dead load?
A permanent force acting on a structure.
What is a live load?
A non permanent force acting on a structure.
What are internal forces?
A force that acts on an object from the inside.
What are four examples of internal stress?
Tension, compression, shear and torsion.
What are three internal forces that can cause damage?
Shear, bend/buckle, and torsion.
What is metal fatigue?
A weakening of metal sue to stress, resulting in an accumulation of small cracks.
