unit 4 Flashcards
What is Commercial Agriculture?
When products are farmed for the use of being sold for money.
What is Subsistence Agriculture?
When products are farmed to feed the people growing the food and the people in the immediate area.
What is Mediterranean Agriculture?
Takes place in areas like California, Italy, Chile/Argentina, South Africa; it is based on horticulture, the farming for fruits, flowers and vegetables. It needs a specific climate in order for these crops to grow, in this case a warm and tropic climate.
What is Pastoral Nomadism?
Also known as nomadic herding, it is a type of subsistence agriculture where people follow around animals and live in tents, easy to build and destroy living areas.
What is Intensive Agriculture?
Needs human work/lots of labor for the food to grow, on a small piece of land.
What is Extensive Agriculture?
Does not need to be watched over by humans (less labor), over a large area of land; can be farmed with machines.
What is the First Agricultural Revolution?
Also known as the Neolithic Revolution; was the shift from hunter and gatherers to subsistence farmers.
What is the Second Agricultural Revolution?
Also known as the Industrialization revolution; The beginning of mechanized farm technology, including plows, large scale farming and irrigation.
What is the Green Revolution?
Took place mid 1900; scientists made advancements in modern day farming methods, including better fertilizer, GMOs, and pesticides.
What are the limitations of the Green Revolution?
Less biodiversity, destruction of soil from excessive pesticides and fertilizers, and the emergence of ‘super pests’.
What is a Hearth?
The origin place of something; can be an idea, religion, device, etc.
What is Mechanization?
The process of using machinery in agriculture.
What is Agribusiness?
A major corporation or company that controls large amounts of food production.
What is Perishability?
Food that can go bad quickly if not preserved.
What is Food Security?
The state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
What are Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?
Organisms/food made to fit the needs of humans and grow faster to keep up with the human growth rate.
What is the Von Thunen Model?
A model that describes agricultural land use in concentric rings around a central market.
What is the first ring in the Von Thunen Model?
Market farming and dairy farming; these products perish quickly.
What is the second ring in the Von Thunen Model?
Forestry; heavy and hard to transport.
What is grain farming in the Von Thunen Model?
Not super perishable and light to transport.
What is livestock farming in the Von Thunen Model?
Soil not as fertile; animals can walk to the center themselves.
