The belief in the superiority of one’s own culture.

The practice of understanding a culture on its own terms.

Mainstream cultural elements that are widely accepted.
What is folk culture?
Traditional practices and customs of a specific group.
What is a cultural landscape?
Forms humans superimpose on their surroundings.
What is sequent occupancy?
Layering of different groups on a cultural landscape.
What is an ethnic neighborhood?
A community with a high concentration of a particular ethnic group.
What does indigenous mean?
What was there originally, before colonizers.
What is centripetal?
Something that bonds people together.
What is centrifugal?
Something that drives people away from each other.
What is acculturation?
Forcing culture on a different group, e.g., forcing Christianity.
What is assimilation?
A minority group adds itself to a larger group.
What is multiculturalism?
The coexistence of multiple cultures in a society.

The blending of different cultural elements.

The policy of extending a country’s power and influence.
What is colonialism?
The practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country.

A global language used for trade.

When a new language is formed from two different languages.

Modern day.
What is cultural convergence?
Two cultures combining through interaction.
What is cultural divergence?
A culture dividing into two or more through isolation.
What does homogenizing mean?
To make something one, putting it under one group.
What is globalization?
The increase of interconnection of the world.
What are language families?
Groups of languages that share a common ancestor.
What is a dialect?
Languages that are similar but have diverged over time.
What is a toponym?
The study of place names reflecting religious groups.
What is a universal religion?
A religion that is widely spread and seeks converts.
What is an ethnic religion?
A religion concentrated in one area and not seeking converts.
Language Families
the largest group a language can be categorized into
indo-european: NA, australia, new zealand, india, europe, africa
sino-tibetan: china and neighboring areas in asia
ethnic neighborhood
an area inside an urban area that displays culture; chinatown, little italy

adding things to an area to make it better and benefit people’s happiness and health; adding trash cans to a public space
colonialism
a country takes over another area and uses it for its own benefits (resources)
imperialism
when a country gets control of another country for power, lean, resources etc.
ethnocentrism
judging another culture based off the values and belief of one’s own culture
popular culture
heterogeneous; urban, always changing, large group of people
folk culture
homogenous; small, rural, not changing frequently (or at all)
Cultural Relativism
the ability to understand a culture on its own terms and not to make judgments using the standards of one’s own culture; opposite of ethnocentrism
