Perfect Participle Rule:

A

Agreement in Number:

Passive voice requires être. Remember: passive participle always changes to agree with the subject when être is involved.

With Avoir:
- If the direct object comes before the verb and is placed before the past participle, the past participle agrees in gender and number with that direct object.
Ex., “Les pommes que j’ai mangées étaient délicieuses.”
- If the direct object comes after the verb or is an indirect object, there is no agreement.
