Political socialization
The process by which people gain their political ideas and opinions
Political Culture
Commonly shared attitudes, beliefs, and core values about how government should operate
Political ideology
The coherent set of values and beliefs about the purpose and scope of government held by groups and individuals
Individualism
Definition: The belief that individuals are responsible for their own well-being and should be able to pursue their own personal and economic ambitions without undue governmental restraint.
Impact:
Encourages self-reliance and personal responsibility.
Often leads to resistance against extensive welfare programs or government interventions in personal choices.
Equality of Opportunity
Definition: The idea that every individual should have an equal chance to succeed in life, irrespective of their background.
Impact:
Supports policies that aim to eliminate barriers based on race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.
Does not guarantee equality of outcome, but ensures everyone has a fair starting point.
Free Enterprise
Definition: An economic system in which businesses operate with limited government interference, allowing for competition and individual initiative.
Impact:
Promotes economic growth, innovation, and consumer choice.
May lead to opposition against extensive regulations or high taxation.
Rule of Law
Definition: The principle that every individual, including government officials, is subject to the law and equal in the eyes of the law.
Impact:
Ensures accountability and justice.
Prevents misuse of power and promotes a transparent legal system.
Limited Government
Definition: The belief that government should be small and its powers should be restricted to essential functions, avoiding interference in individual rights and freedoms.
Impact:
May resist the expansion of governmental powers or roles.
Supports decentralization and states’ rights.
